Project:
Higham Hill Hub
Field:
Community, New Build, Sustainable Construction
Location:
London, UK
Year:
2025 (under construction)
The new Higham Hill Hub will replace the current portacabin facilities on the old bowling green in Higham Hill Park with a purpose-built, low-impact community centre. Designed to be flexible, welcoming, low-carbon, and low-energy, the hub will be built using natural materials and powered by renewable energy systems. It will offer adaptable spaces for workshops, community activities, and a large hall for meetings and performances.

Constructed from Hempcrete, a natural, carbon-sequestering material, the hub has been developed in collaboration with UCL through research and development into hemp-lime construction. This work, published in A Comparative Analysis of Hemp-Lime Assemblies for Low-Carbon Building Construction, informs the building’s design—harnessing hempcrete’s thermal and moisture-regulating properties to create a comfortable, low-carbon environment for the community.

Set in the heart of the borough’s most deprived ward, the hub will be a catalyst for local connection, learning, and wellbeing. It will open directly onto the park, creating a vibrant, safe, and inclusive place for people of all ages to gather, celebrate, and share ideas.
