The Hadley Road Community Allotment in Mitcham is home to a pioneering new community hub, designed by Studio DERA and built using the innovative CobBauge construction method – the first building in London to be made this way.

This new facility provides an outdoor classroom and accessible toilet, creating a welcoming, sustainable space for plot holders, local schools, and community groups. The design embraces natural materials, with walls formed from earth, straw, and hemp shiv, delivering both strength and excellent thermal performance without the need for mechanical heating. A lightweight timber roof structure shelters a central courtyard, encouraging year-round use during the gardening season.



The outdoor classroom will host educational workshops, school visits, and projects run in partnership with local organisations, including a medical practice supporting young people to learn about food growing. Plot holders will also benefit from an outdoor sink, barbecue area, and improved facilities, enabling longer and more comfortable visits to the allotment.

The project is a collaboration between Hadley Road Community Allotment CIC, Studio DERA, University College London’s Bartlett Manufacturing and Design Exchange, and the CobBauge Project led by the University of Plymouth, with funding from local and national supporters.
